Mathematical Morphology and Geology: When Image Analysis Uses the Vocabulary of Earth Science a Review of Some Applications

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Mathematical Morphology has proYed to be a yery powerful methodology in various applications of image analysis: industrial control, medical imagery, telecommunications, material sciences... This approach, however, has not yet fully entered the geological domain although many morphological tools can be described by referring to the vocabulary of earth science. A morphologist commonly uses concepts and tools named erosions, watersheds, catchment basins, flooding, levelings, crest lines, summits, ridges, valleys and so on. The aim of this lecture is to present some of these morphological tools and, through some applications in petrography, geology and seismic data processing, to explain their use and their interest in various image processing tasks such as filtering, segmentation and feature extraction. keywords: image analysis, image segmentation, geodesy, mathematical morphology, watersheds.

Structural Controls on Cu Metallogenesis in the Dehaj Area, Kerman Porphyry Copper Belt, Iran: A Remote Sensing Perspective

Structural analysis of remotely sensed data provides a method of assessing the structural significance of regional metallogenesis in the Dehaj area as the northwestern part of the Kerman porphyry Cu belt. This belt is consisted of dominant Eocene volcanics and the Dehaj type subvolcanic intrusives. In the study area, geologically, Cu-mineralization is hosted by the Kuh-e-Panj type subvolcanic i...

Structural overview of the Halab-Gheydar area, southwest of Zanjan, NW Iran

Understanding the folding style of a fold-thrust belt is crucial to understand the nature and structural history of structures that may trap natural resources within the belt. In this research, the geometry and mechanism of a number of fault-related folds has been investigated based on field data and satellite image interpretations. The main study areas are: the Sohrevard and Ushtaniyan anticli...

Chapter 8 Laboratories in the Earth Sciences

Introduction In reviewing and assessing the importance and role of laboratory exercises in earth sciences, we begin with defining the scope of this review. The ensuing discussion is limited to fields of study that have traditionally formed the core of studies of the solid earth, specifically geology, soil science, and geomatics (remote sensing and geographic information systems). Related subjec...
